Anticipating the Power of Lynx: Mock Observations with pyXSIM and SOXS

John ZuHone, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics

Abstract

The proposed Lynx X-ray Observatory brings together the high angular resolution of Chandra with a sizable increase in effective area and high spectral resolution via a microcalorimeter. In order to fully appreciate the potential of Lynx, mock X-ray observations of simulated astrophysical sources, including images and spectra, are required. I will present two software packages: SOXS, which simulates mock Lynx observations as well as those from other X-ray observatories, and pyXSIM, which generates synthetic events for input into Lynx from 3D astrophysics simulations. I will describe the capabilities of these packages and show examples of simulated observations. The wider X-ray astronomy community is encouraged to use these packages in order to build the science case for Lynx.
